Freeze Dryer Set Up and Oil Pump Maintenance
Harvest Right freeze dryer set up and oil pump maintenance.
In this video, you are guided through the process of using the Harvest Right oil filter, a system designed to filter oil for both standard and premier oil pumps used in freeze drying. The filtration system is akin to a Brita water filter but is specifically engineered for oil.
Tools needed:
- Paper towels
- Oil filter system with replacement cartridges
- Harvest Right oil (standard or premier, depending on your pump)
Steps
- Understanding the equipment: Recognize the type of oil pump you have, whether it’s the premier model with a bright green color and a sight glass that’s either rectangular or circular, or the standard oil pump.
- Draining the oil: Start by opening the demister and drain the oil into the filtration system, which consists of a top basin where you pour the oil and a filter cartridge that captures particulates.
- Filtering the oil: Allow the oil to pass through the filter. If the oil stops draining and remains in the top basin, it’s an indication that the filter cartridge needs replacement.
- Assessing the filtered oil: After filtration, if the oil is clear with no signs of water contamination, it can be reused. If the oil appears cloudy or has a gunky water portion, it’s best to start with new oil.
- Returning oil to the pump: Pour the clean, filtered oil back into the pump, making sure it’s within the minimum and maximum fill lines. The premier oil pump holds 600 milliliters of oil, while the standard pump holds 500 milliliters.
- Finalizing the setup: Replace the demister cap and ensure the gas ballast is open for the premier pump. The standard pump is filled in the same manner.
- Maintenance reminder: Keep track of how often you filter the oil and the clarity of the oil after filtration to determine when to replace the filter cartridge. Replacement cartridges are available in packs of three from Harvest Right.
