Freeze Dried to Retain Nutrients Taste and Freshness
Freeze drying food extends the shelf life with almost no lose of nutrients or taste or shape. Back Country Cuisine is made from whole foods using freeze drying to lock in the taste, nutrients, freshness and reducing weight too! The food is then packaged into special handy pouches that have been flushed with nitrogen and then sealed tightly. The pouches are air and light and moisture proof. Here is how Back Country Cuisine freeze dry meals are made.
Long Shelf Life
Back Country Cuisine foods have a best before date of 4 years. Meals older than 4 years are perfectly safe to eat but the flavour may get weaker after 5 years as long as the bag hasnt been opened or damaged.
When properly packaged freeze dried food can be kept for up to 25 years using moisture and oxygen proof packaging like Mylar Bags and Oxygen Absorbers. No refrigeration is needed.

New Zealand Made from Recyclable Pouches
Back Country Cuisine began supplying freeze dried food in 1998 and it is made in Invercargill New Zealand from fresh ingredients that are freeze dried and packaged into individual pouches which have been flushed with nitrogen and then sealed tightly. You can learn more about Back Country Cuisine and its origins here.
The pouches are recyclable in the soft plastics recycling bin and perfectly safe to use with boiling water. The pouch is made up of three layers.
Starting from the inside, the first layer of the pouch is a special plastic that is safe to use with boiling water and protects the meal and your spoon from the next layer of thin aluminum foil. Aluminum forms the heart of our pouch and provides a very high barrier to oxygen, moisture and light entering the pouch from the outside. Another benefit of Aluminum is that it can be fully recycled and reused an infinite number of times. The last layer is the colourful outside layer of plastic which protects the Aluminum foil from being punctured from the outside.
